Updated: 12/04/2008 1:02 PM KSTP.com | CAFFREY: Critical assetsPeople who work in the media always want to give the viewer or reader as much up to minute information as possible. To be accurate and informative is our ultimate goal and responsibility. While embedded with the military these rules of reporting change. We must sign confidentiality agreements not to give specific numbers of Airmen while on missions, to be vague in the movements they make regarding locations and time of arrival, and not report the number of assets like aircraft specifically. With terrorist operatives around the world watching every broadcast, or scanning web site links it's important these enemies of state can't use any information to formulate a plan to strike. At 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS, our intention has been to report some of the movements of the 133rd Airlift Wing to and from Bagram Base in Afghanistan with a virtual map and also updated information on our travel progress. We believed it would be interesting to viewers and family members if they could track the time it took the Wing to get to the war. This reporting has been frustrating to Air Force command at times during this assignment because some information we reported was too specific. We have made changes in the name of security. Remember Geraldo getting kicked out of Gulf War 2 when he drew lines in the sand. KSTP was the only crew to document he and his crew loading onto Blackhawk choppers as he left Iraq for Kuwait, and a flight back to the United States. While we are not censored we are watched closely to be careful. Complacency can be a serious problem. There's a reason different levels of security are in place. The Airmen appreciate the stories we send back so their families can see the work they are doing. And the viewers should appreciate it when we speak in generalities while reporting. |
