MCLEAN: Returning home

After a few days in Afghanistan we are on the way home now. We have more stories you can still see on 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS over the next couple of days. There is so much going on we can't possible get it all in. So we found a few things that you should find interesting.

Crews with the 133rd took me and photo chief Joe Caffrey out on a couple of missions in Afghanistan. During a night mission I got to sit up front again and look out with the night vision goggles. We picked up and dropped off troops from more remote bases around the country. You see right away how hard the troops are working. The crews with the 133rd are doing their part too. They fly for 12 hours at a time then take a break to sleep and eat and get back at it again. We had a tough time keeping up. In fact, we hardly had time to sleep on base because as soon as the mission was over Joe and I would look at the video we shoot and start putting stories together. Once we got them done it was time to visit another part of the base or meet more airmen or soldiers. We got to meet a few local Afghans too. We'll have more of their stories to come.

Most of the military members we met tell us they prefer being busy because it makes the time go by faster. No mater what type of job they are doing it seems they work at it all day and try to do the best they can. It's a busy base.

Now that we're on the way home I'm looking forward to catching up on sleep and updating this blog with more of the adventures of Assignment Afghanistan. This is the first time I've had Internet access for the last few days so there's a lot to catch up on. Look for more...
