Swastikas found on 'U' dorm doors

University of Minnesota Campus Police are investigating two cases of graffiti after swastikas were found on the door of dorm rooms in Pioneer Hall.

Students said they come here to the university to expand their horizons, and it’s also a reason why many are upset about a Halloween prank now under investigation.

"We're in 2008 here…I’m completely against that," said student Dominique Massiemartel.

Police said two students had swastikas scrawled on their dorm room doors.

"That is the first I’ve heard of it, that is surprising. I didn't think anything like that would happen here," said student Jeff Mitchem.

University Police were called after a staff member on patrol made the discovery on Monday night.

They took pictures of the magic marker swastikas and interviewed the students.

Investigators believe the symbols were made Halloween night and that students may have tried cleaned it but the incident wasn’t reporter to officials.

"There is no indication that residents were targeted. They weren't concerned about them being placed there and again, weren't targeted," explained Campus Police Deputy Chief Charles Miner.

Students said the school sent them email, warning about hate crimes.

"Just the fact that people are being discriminated against others in the dorms, we should all be equal," said student Cassie Giesinger.

The case is currently classified as criminal property damage, but charges will increase if authorities discover the students were targeted because of race or religion.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the University of Minnesota Campus Police Department at (612) 624-2677.
