Mpls. home to the smallest school forest in the state

There are now thousands of chances to learn on less than an acre of land.

New Visions Academy, a charter school in northeast Minneapolis, dedicated its new school forest Thursday.

At a quarter-acre, it's the smallest school forest in Minnesota. It has just 33 trees, which the students will study as they grow.

The Department of Natural Resources said the small school forest is just as important as large ones in other parts of the state.

"We need to educate people where they live…people need to go to nature where they live," explained DNR School Forest Coordinator Amy Kay Kerber.

The forest marks the completion of New Visions Academy’s ‘Roots and Shoots’ science addition.
