After an extensive $2 million renovation, the Roseville Skating Center's Arena will reopen to the public Wednesday.
In addition to new boards and other outward improvements, the building is now using a geothermal system to heat and cool the facility. There are 96 wells dug underneath the ice, some more that 180 feet deep, where temperatures stay consistent. The pipes contain glycol, an antifreeze-like substance.
In the winter, the pipes will transfer heat from the ground into the building, and then reverse the process in the summer.
The new geothermal system is expected to cut energy costs by about $30,000 a year.
