Man beaten by 35W Bridge workers in Mpls.

Two 35W Bridge workers were fired Wednesday for their conduct off-the-clock. The men and another co-worker are accused of beating a Minneapolis man as he left a downtown bar.

Karl Aarsheim, 32, told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS he was leaving the Eagle Bar on Washington Avenue, not far from the bridge site, Tuesday night when 34-year-old Otto Marin and two other men approached him.

"[Marin] said, 'um, what are you, a faggot?' and I said, 'no, but what if I were?' I didn't know what happened until I was being kicked in the head," said Aarsheim.

Witnesses broke up the fight. Aarsheim received four stitches for a cut above his eye, but refused a CAT scan or other hospital care because he has no insurance.

A manager at Grumpy's Bar said the same three men had been thrown out of that bar last week for being too aggressive. He said they tossed bottles and glass at the bartender. He said the men came back Tuesday night, but were asked to leave.

Marin was arrested and charged with misdemeanor fifth-degree assault. If convicted, he faces up to 90 days in jail.

When 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS contacted the men's employer, Flatiron Construction, management took swift action. Marin and another man were fired and kicked out of the company-paid housing. Flatiron officials said Marin will never work for them again on any U.S. project.

"We absolutely want him fired and I also want the company to think about how their employees are behaving in the neighborhood," said Aarsheim's wife, Nikki.

Flatiron said it does not do background checks on it's employees and is not required to by the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Marin came to the Twin Cities from San Diego, Calif. two weeks ago to work on the new 35W Bridge project, according to Flatiron. Officials said his current whereabouts are unknown, but he is due in court Thursday morning.
