Henn. Co. takes step toward Fort Snelling renovation

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Hennepin County officials say a task force is being formed to consider asking Congress to step into the ongoing efforts to preserve part of Fort Snelling.

The task force will consider asking for a congressional act that would establish a commission to determine the redevelopment of the 141-acre site in unincorporated Hennepin County.

The section of Fort Snelling in question is the old Upper Post headquarters. The site includes 28 buildings built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Since the post was decommissioned in 1946, the buildings have fallen into disrepair. In 2006, the National Trust for Historic Preservation named the Upper Post one of the country's 11 most endangered historic sites.

County officials say it may take more than $100 million rehabilitate and develop the site.
