KSTP/KSTC honored at Minnesota Emmy Awards 10/29/01

KSTP-TV and KSTC-TV took home thirteen Emmys at the second annual Regional Emmy Awards and Silver Circle Induction held Saturday at the Metropolitan Ballroom in Golden Valley. The regional Emmy Awards are presented by the Minnesota Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

KSTP/KSTC news anchor Harris Faulkner was named "Best Anchor" for Channel 5 Eyewitness News Live at 5 and Channel 45 Eyewitness News at Nine weekdays. Eyewitness News also won Emmys for Investigative Reporting, Hard Feature, and Sports Segment/Feature, among numerous awards for individual technical achievement. The station led in Community and Public Service, honored for Science Museum Wonders public service announcement and Race for the Cure 2001 campaign. Channel 45, celebrating its one-year anniversary, earned its first Emmy for Kung Fu Theater: Non-News Promotion Spot.

In addition to presenting the Emmy Awards, the Academy inducted Stanley S. Hubbard, Chairman and CEO of Hubbard Broadcasting Inc., into the Silver Circle. The Silver Circle honors lifetime achievement and contribution to the industry, the highest honor bestowed by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Mr. Hubbard has continued the family tradition of being a pioneer in the broadcast industry. His accomplishments include the building of the first successful UHF television station in a VHS market. With others in the Hubbard organization, he created the world’s first satellite news gathering organization: Conus Communications. He established United States Satellite Broadcasting (USSB), the original licensee for high-powered Direct Broadcast Satellite Service in the U.S. which (together with Hughes’ DIRECTV) established DSS (Digital Satellite System) the first high-powered digital broadcast system in the world. Mr. Hubbard has served on numerous government committees and commissions, as well as local corporate and community boards.

KSTP-TV and KSTC-TV, home of Eyewitness News, are owned and operated by Hubbard Broadcasting, Inc. in Minneapolis-St. Paul. Hubbard Broadcasting also owns and operates five other television stations in Minnesota including KSAX-TV, Alexandria; KRWF-TV, Redwood Falls; WDIO-TV, Duluth; WIRT-TV, Hibbing; and KAAL-TV, Austin. Among Hubbard’s television properties outside of Minnesota are WHEC-TV, Rochester, New York and WNYT-TV, Albany, New York plus three stations in New Mexico: KOB-TV, Albuquerque; KOBF-TV, Farmington; and KOBR-TV, Roswell. KSTP-TV (the Minneapolis-Saint Paul ABC affiliate) and independent KSTC-TV Forty5 remain the only locally-owned, locally-operated television news stations serving the Twin Cities area.
