Soaring fuel prices are impacting all parts of the economy, but few sectors have been harder hit than the airline industry. The cost of air travel is skyrocketing, pushing some to suggest that air travel may soon be out of reach of average travelers.

So, why not drive?

There many destinations within driving distance of the Twin Cities that can serve as excellent summer vacation destinations that do not require forking over a week's pay for airline ticket. I can think of few things better than relaxing lakeside on the North Shore or fishing one one of northern Minnesota's placid lakes.

You're thinking that the nice resorts are already booked for weekends through the summer. Probably, so just don't use them.

Try one of the best-kept travel secrets on the web: vrbo.com. It stands for Vacation Rentals By Owner. It works much different than traditional travel web sites. Homeowners put their homes up for rent on the site and allow travelers to rent out their space in popular destinations around, including some of Minnesota's most beautiful settings.

You can find some incredible rates at prime locations using VRBO. I spent the weekend combing the site for great travel deals around the state and found quite a few, they are listed below.

But, first, many people are usually curious for a further description of how the site works and whether or not it's safe. The links below address those curiosities:

Ok, now for those Minnesota summer lake destination deals:
