Carl Eller breaks his silence

NFL Hall of Fame and former Vikings star Carl Eller broke his silence Wednesday, two weeks after his arrest for DWI and allegedly assaulting Minneapolis Police officers.

"I've still got a battle in front of me, a really tough battle. It's certainly unfortunate that it happened. I feel it's something I have to work through and come through. I'd love to come through it unscathered, because I certainly feel that I was not doing anything wrong, but we'll have to see about that," Eller said.

Eller talked to 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS about those events and the blockbuster trade that brings defensive end Jared Allen from Kansas City to Minnesota.

Like Allen, Eller was an all-pro defensive end for the Vikings back during the organization’s glory years. Also like Allen, Eller has struggled off the field with issues related to alcohol.

"I can understand that Jared's position and the demons he'll have to deal with, which are more complicated as a player because you have all the amenities that go along with success and stardom" Eller said.

He also predicted that Tarvaris Jackson would be the most important Vikings player on the field this season.

"I personally have great confidence in Tarvaris. I think he has great skills," Eller said.

While 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS went to Eller’s home with the intention of talking just football, when he was asked how he was doing, he offered a candid assessment of his situation and the continued temptations that still await Allen.

"I'm holding up, but not very well. This has been a very critical thing for me. It's been mind-boggling. You know it's just totally an erroneous thing that happens to a person," Eller explained.
