The Minnesota Timberwolves held a press conference with the players acquired in the Kevin Love trade at the Minnesota State Fair Tuesday.
The Minnesota Timberwolves began a new era by officially announcing Andrew Wiggins, Anthony Bennett and Thaddeus Young as the newest members of the organization. The Wolves traded away Kevin Love, Alexey Shved and Luc Mbah a Moute in the three-team deal that included the Philadelphia 76ers and Cleveland Cavaliers.
Wiggins was the first overall selection in the 2014 NBA draft. Wiggins, a former highly touted high school recruit, played one year of college basketball at Kansas before declaring for the NBA draft. Wiggins has the potential to be a great defender in the NBA due to his size, speed and athleticism.
"I'm situated in a spot I know I'm going to be in for a very very long time," Wiggins said.
Bennett was the 2013 first overall selection in the NBA draft from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Bennett played in 52 games last season, averaging 4.2 points per game.
"I just want to have fun with these guys and the coaching staff," Bennett said. "I just want to come out here and play hard."
Wiggins and Bennett are both Canadian born first overall selections. Wiggins seemed to be very excited about the future and the group of young players the Wolves have on their roster.
"We're young, athletic, we have a lot of freaks on this team ... I think it'll bring us to a whole different level," he said.
Young, acquired from Philadelphia, is expected to replace Love at power forward in the starting lineup. Young has played all seven NBA seasons with the 76ers before being traded to Minnesota, averaging 17.9 points per game.
"I think it's going to be an easy transition," Young said. "As far as us going to the post season it's going to take some work, but I think we got a good core group of guys ..."
Young is going to have to be a leader on this young Timberwolves team along with PG Ricky Rubio, who is only 23 years old. Young was the 12th overall selection by the 76ers in the 2007 NBA draft.
