Police are cracking down on impaired drivers beginning this weekend.

Law enforcement will be focusing extra attention on impaired drivers during a campaign that runs through Labor Day. Officers announced the campaign Thursday with a news conference featuring people who have lost loved ones in impaired driving-related crashes.

“It takes just one very poor decision to shatter so many lives,” said Donna Berger, OTS director. “Summer days are special to Minnesotans as we enjoy our lakes, parks and all the beauty and activities our state has to offer. Let’s keep these days special and all motorists safe by not letting drinking and driving destroy lives.”

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety says 81 people died in alcohol-related crashes in the state last year alone. In addition, 2,300 people were injured last year.

The campaign runs Aug. 16 through Sept. 1.
