Outdoor house repairs nearly took a deadly turn for a Minneapolis homeowner Wednesday.

Firefighters say Jeff Zajac was trying to fix the foundation of his home on Shoreview Avenue near Lake Nokomis when the trench caved in on top of him.

He was buried up to his neck in dirt and clay.

Jeff Zajac's father, Steve, was on site and immediately called 9-1-1.

Crews got there quickly and gave Zajac oxygen as they dug him out of the hole.

Steve Zajac says he's grateful he told his son not to do any work on the trench until he arrived.

Jeff Zajac went to Hennepin County Medical Center where he was evaluated.
