An expansion six years in the making is finally on track to be completed.

The Mankato Civic Center will undergo a $14.5 million expansion. The funding was included in the 2014 Jobs Bill passed by the legislature and signed into law. The expansion includes adding an auditorium, additional meeting rooms and renovating the ice arena.

The expansion is expected to create more than 450 new construction jobs and generate $50 million for the local economy every year.

“This project was long overdue,” Gov. Mark Dayton said. “The expansion of the Mankato Civic Center will add hundreds of new jobs and bring thousands more visitors to Mankato every year. I congratulate the man community leaders who worked for years to complete this important project.”

The expansion means updated rinks for the Minnesota State University Mankato hockey teams, because they practice and compete at the facility.

The Jobs Bill invested $107 million in the Mankato Area. The funding will go toward building a clinical sciences facility at Minnesota State University Mankato, repairing the Rapidan Dam, improving the Minnesota River Trail, improving safety at the Minnesota State Security Hospital and constructing and equipping existing buildings for residential and program operations for the state sex offender program.
