In this week’s edition of At Issue, host Tom Hauser gives a preview of Tuesday’s primary election in Minnesota. Over in Wisconsin, a battle is brewing between Scott Walker and Mary Burke in the Governor’s race; it’s a dead heat. Burke joins Hauser in the studio.
Also, At Issue shows you the evidence jury saw in the Jesse Ventura defamation case.
GOP Governor primaries
Minnesotans find out Tuesday whether one of the four republican candidates hoping to unseat Gov. Mark Dayton has separated from the pack.
Political analysts say republican voters might have a tough time differentiating between Marty Seifert, Kurt Zellers, Jeff Johnson, and Scott Honour.
They all debated at Farmfest in Morton, Minnesota, last week. While they showed few policy differences, they didn't have a problem attacking Dayton's record.
The latest campaign fundraising totals show Honour has a significant lead over his opponents, even though much of it is his own money.
According to the state's Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board, Honour has raised nearly $1.2 million from the beginning of the year to July 24. He chipped in $800,000 from his own pocket.
In the same period, Zellers raised more than $265,000 dollars. Johnson raised nearly $234,000. Seifert was just short of $200,000.
Absentee ballots must be returned no later than primary election day Tuesday.
As of last Thursday, nearly 16,000 absentee ballots were returned and accepted. There were still about 10,000 left to process.
Construction is underway on a controversial new office building for the Minnesota Senate.
Work started quietly this past week, without an official groundbreaking. That encouraged republican gubernatorial candidate Jeff Johnson to conduct his own "mock" groundbreaking.
The verdict in the Jesse Ventura defamation case surprised many people.
Jurors ruled the estate of Navy SEAL Chris Kyle owes Ventura $1.8 million for defaming the former governor.
Evidence from the case was made available. At Issue shows you some of what the jury saw and heard in court, including a Kyle’s video deposition.
Mary Burke interview
A Democratic candidate for governor of Wisconsin stopped by the At Issue studio. Mary Burke is taking on current Gov. Scott Walker.
A Marquette University poll released in July showed Burke closely trailing Walker. Burke is a former Trek bicycle executive running her first statewide campaign for office. A majority of survey respondents said they didn't know enough about her to form an opinion.
But if anyone knows how to survive a political setback, it's Walker.? ?He is the only governor in U.S. history to win a recall election. The 2012 effort to remove him was launched in reaction to the law passed the previous year that effectively ended collective bargaining for most public workers, a fight that drew tens of thousands of protesters to the Capitol and made Wisconsin the center of a national battle over union rights.
Tom Hauser and 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS will have extensive coverage of the primary elections Tuesday. Check back with KSTP.com for election updates.
