Internet speeds are about to hit the gas. The Twin Cities is one of just 16 metropolitan areas across the county who will see broadband speeds up to one gigabit per second from CenturyLink.

To give you some perspective, Comcast's fastest internet speed is 105 megabit per second. One-thousand megabits equal one gigabit, so the new service is about 10 times faster.

The cost for CenturyLink's new service is about $109 a month. Comcast's cost is about $114 per month.

The demand for faster internet speeds has been growing as more people turn to the web to watch TV and movies.
