Former Gopher athlete and University of Minnesota supporter Bob McNamara died at the age of 82 on Sunday, July 20.

The university announced McNamara's death on Monday. The school says McNamara died after a long illness on Sunday night.

McNamara was an All-American football player for the Gophers from 1951 to 1954. He also played two seasons with the Gopher basketball team, earning a letter in 1953.

After his time with the Gophers, McNamara continued playing football with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the Canadian Football League and later two seasons with the Denver Broncos in the AFL.

McNamara was also a generous supporter of University of Minnesota athletics. He and his wife, Annette, played a large role in the construction of TCF Bank Stadium, Baseline Tennis Center, Siebert Field and numerous other facilities on campus.

The McNamara Academic Center located in the Bierman Field Athletic Building was named in honor of Bob and his brother Richard "Pinky" McNamara, who also played football for the Gophers. The center is used by more-than 750 student-athletes daily to help achieve academic success.
