Students from the University of Minnesota’s College of Science and Engineering on Tuesday are showing off a car that’s powered only by the sun.

The school is among 24 teams competing in the American Solar Challenge. The event is typically held every other year during the summer and is open to solar car teams from countries all over the world.

About 50 students are part of the team, and 17 of them will be racing the solar-powered vehicle more than 1,700 miles from Austin, Texas, back to Minneapolis from July 21-28.

The students designed and built the vehicle themselves. The U of M’s car, named Centaurus III, is about 3 feet tall, 16 feet long, and 6 feet wide.
