New Panel Studying Government Data Issues Convenes

Rules for drones, license plate readers on police cruisers and abuse of government data may be on the agenda for a new commission studying Minnesota's privacy and data practices laws.

The Legislative Commission on Data Practices met near the state Capitol for the first time Tuesday to brainstorm issues to tackle. The panel was created by lawmakers last session amid concern that government data issues are growing faster than laws to deal with them.

Rep. John Lesch, a St. Paul Democrat, says they need to know what technologies law enforcement and other government agencies use to collect data on Minnesotans.

The commission of four appointees each from the House and Senate has an advisory role. Any law changes still must go through the Legislature and be signed by the governor.
