Gopher high jumper Wally Ellenson will compete in the 2014 NCAA National Track and Field Outdoor Championship held June 11 through June 14.
Ellenson tied for first Friday at the NCAA West Prelims, earning his second trip to the National Championship.
He was able to clear seven feet, one inch without a miss, a feat that only six jumpers have accomplished in the country this season.
As a freshman, Ellenson landed on the First-Team All American, placing eighth at the 2013 National Championship.
He was also a member of the University of Minnesota basketball team during his freshman year but later quit to focus on his track and field endeavors.
Ellenson plans to transfer after the 2014 season to attend a school where he is able to compete in both track and basketball.
According to the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, Wally is currently tied for seventh in the national rankings.
Ellenson and four of his teammates will compete in the Division I National Championship, which begins Wednesday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
