Saks Off 5th in downtown Minneapolis will close next January, according to the company.
The discount department store, located at 651 Nicollet Mall, has been on the mall for 25 years. It sits in the south end of the Gaviidae Plaza.
When Hudson's Bay Company acquired Saks Incorporated, the decision to close the store had already been made, according to Tiffany Bourree, director of external communications for Husdon's.
Bourree said they are still looking for opportunities to reopen a location in downdown.
The Minneapolis / St. Paul Business Journal reports an upscale Walgreens could move into the location when Saks' lease is up January 2015.
In 2004, the store cut its square footage in half by giving up two of its four floors. Those two floors remain vacant.
Meanwhile, another Saks Off 5th location will open at the Twin Cities Premium Outlets in Eagan sometime this summer.
