Minnesotans are getting ready to hit the road this weekend, but roads are backed up due to construction.

Both east and westbound lanes of Interstate 94 in Monticello closed Thursday night between County Road 18 and Highway 25. The portion of I-94 was reduced to one lane after a pavement failure around 1 p.m. Friday, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

MnDOT created two temporary lanes in each direction, but the lanes are much narrower than they normally are. The speed limit is also reduced down to 55 mph in the area.

Motorists should use alternate routes until all four lanes of I-94 are switched from the temporary bypass lanes back to the permanent lanes.

Two other projects will also slow you down. The Highway 10 interchange in Rice just north of St. Cloud will have narrowed lanes, and Interstate 35E will be down to one lane through Owatonna.

You only have a couple of hours to avoid a big headache on the roads. AAA says the peak travel times on this holiday weekend are between noon and 8 p.m. both Friday and Monday. If you’re heading out of town, you’re going to want to avoid those 8-hour travel periods if at all possible.

Gas Prices

If you’re one of the millions of people planning to drive somewhere this weekend, you’ll be happy to hear that gas prices aren’t looking too bad compared to last year.

The average price per gallon is $3.46 in the Twin Cities; last year at this time it was $4.27. Analysts expect prices to continue to slide lower through the start of the summer.

Safety

Memorial Day through Labor Day is known as the 100 Deadliest Days of Summer for teen drivers.

Lt. Eric Roeske with the Minnesota State Patrol joined 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS on Friday morning to talk about how parents can keep teens safe and what teens should do if they get in an accident.

Flights

The Memorial Day weekend is primarily a driving holiday in Minnesota, but the TSA still expects 15,000-24,000 passengers to fly out of the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport each day this weekend.

If you’re flying, you should arrive two hours before your flight departs to give yourself plenty of time to check in and get through security.
