Portraits, Busts Moved from State Capitol Amid Makeover

Created: 05/23/2014 5:25 AM KSTP.com

No, it's not a Capitol artwork heist in progress.

Portraits and busts of noted Minnesota politicians as well as some framed paintings are being systematically removed from the state Capitol. It's being done to protect them during a ramp-up in construction during the ongoing renovation.

Portraits of former Minnesota governors hang on the walls around the century-old building. Ones depicting Rudy Perpich, Tim Pawlenty and other former state leaders have already been taken down.

Brian Pease of the Minnesota Historical Society says artwork will remain in spaces open to public access during construction, but that will be limited.

Some of the artwork will be restored before it is put back up. The Capitol renovation is due for completion by 2017.
