Minnesota's brutally cold winter had an impact on Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) populations but likely not enough to have a substantial long term impact.

Jeff Hahn, an Entomologist with the University of Minnesota Extension, says as many as 70 percent of the EAB didn't survive winter. "But eventually they're going to get the better of us, and as their numbers there will be a point where the numbers just explode," he said.

Jeff Hafner with Rainbow Tree Care says the EAB the population may be lower but the setback is temporary. "There may have been a reduction in the total number of pests, but not enough to eliminate the problem."

According Hahn, the good news is that for the time being a problem that had been growing rapidly has been dealt a setback. "I think for at least this coming year we will expect to see fewer of them."
