Get Growing: Tips to Get Big, Fresh Tomatoes

You know the taste of a fresh tomato picked straight from the garden. There’s something about it that's just a little juicier and a little sweeter than what you get at the store.

In order to enjoy the fresh taste this summer and fall, home and garden guru Larry Pfarr says you will need plenty of sunshine and water to get your tomato plants to grow.

He also recommends having some sort of support for the plants like a tomato cage or bamboo stakes.

Pfarr also says it's best to find plants with dark green leaves. He says when you plant them, you will want to remove the bottom leaves, leaving just the top leaves.

He says place the plant in the soil up to the top leaves so more roots can take hold and produce bigger, better tomatoes.

KSTP meteorologist Dave Dahl said Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. will be the best window of time to get out and work in the garden.
