Minneapolis is getting more parks, but they won't be in the form of green space like you might be used to.

Instead, the city is going to see an increase in parklets, or pocket parks. They're miniature parks about the size of just a couple of parking spaces, part of a new pilot project launched by the city.

Minneapolis will use $75,000 to build three parklets in commercial and retail areas throughout the city in places like Dinkytown near the University of Minnesota campus and Uptown where there's not as much green space.

One of the proposed sites is at the intersection of West 36th Street and Bryant Ave South in Minneapolis.

The average size is only about 40 feet long, or about two parking spaces.

But as other cities have shown, you can do a lot with a little.

San Francisco and Seattle have popularized parklets, having built a combined 93 parklets and sustained interest to add more. Some of them feature greenery and benches. Others have rocking chairs or a bean bag.

The parklets in Minneapolis will start sprouting in July and will remain through at least October.

From there, it remains to be seen what can grow from a 40-foot slab of concrete.
