It's estimated that every three minutes a child somewhere in the world is born with a cleft lip or cleft palate. A baby born with a cleft has twice the odds of dying before their first birthday.

But a group of Minnesotans is working to change that, and perform other necessary procedures for people suffering around the world.

KSTP first shared the work of Dr. Peter Melchert of Minneapolis last January when KSTP's Chris Egert traveled to Tanzania. He showed you how passionate Minnesotans are helping women suffering from a childbirth complication called obstetric fistula.

Dr. Melchert also works with a group called Children's Surgery International. They are about to hold one of their biggest fundraising events of the year.
