In this week's Thursday's Child, KSTP checked in with a bright woman, whose life hasn't always been easy.

Her father was deported when she was young, her mother struggled to makes ends meet, and she eventually ended up in foster care - but none of that stopped Sanni Brown-Adefope.

Brown-Adefope is now a radio personality for 89.9 KMOJ and has a show from 2-5 a.m.

She also does work with the Minnesota Autism Center, she's on the board of the Alliance of Women in Media, and she's a student at the National Speakers Association Speaker Academy.

At the age of 15, Brown-Adefope was placed in foster care. Her first home catered to younger kids. It wasn't a good fit. In her second home, she thrived.

"I was captain on the cheerleading squad. I was in choir. I was prom queen. I was a debutant. So that's proof positive that when a child is placed in the right conditions, they can really soar and take off," she said.

Brown-Adefope says she had a very strong role model at her second home. The woman required Brown-Adefope to go to school and get good grades. She later graduated from Concordia College and won a full-ride scholarship to the Broadcast Center in St. Louis, Mo.

Her advice to others in the foster care system is, "Find something you really, really like and then don't let anybody or anything stop you from getting it, because that's the motivation you're going to need when things look grim, and things are going to look grim."
