Along with a new coaching staff comes a change to offseason workouts for the Vikings.

The team will focus on a free weight based training program, rather than using machines, to increase strength and explosiveness. Coaches recommended players get a head start on the program before returning to Winter Park for offseason workouts.

"I thought they did very well," said strength and conditioning coach Evan Marcus following Tuesday's training session, which was open to media. Most guys showed up in shape, ready to work, Marcus said.

"When a new staff comes in there's always some level of excitement. So they want to prove themselves. They want to come in... shape so they make a good name of themselves right off the start," Marcus said.

For many players, the training strategy isn't new. Many experienced similar style in college.

Vikings linebacker Chad Greenway said the biggest difference is that the team is working out together.

"It makes it a little easier, just to be around your teammates during this time where we're getting meetings and learning the defense together and going through the schemes together. It's more of a college atmosphere," he said.

Those group workouts can add more than physical strength.

"That college atmosphere, where the focus is solely on development, why not translate that over to here," Marcus said. "Build some energy, build accountability, build leadership... I think that's all the stuff that's important to team building."
