One person is dead after a crash in Clay County early Wednesday morning.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, two semis were traveling eastbound on Interstate 94 at Highway 34 around 4 a.m.

The first semi tried to pass the second one when the second one lost control and crashed into the first one. The impact sent the first semi off the road into the median, where it hit a guardrail and bridge pillar, according to the state patrol.

Officials say the roads were icy at the time.

The driver of the second vehicle was identified as 53-year-old Thomas P. Harrington Jr. of North St. Paul. He had no apparent injury.

The Barnesville Police Department and Clay County Sheriff’s Office responded.
