Those who drive in Eagan may have noticed an increase in traffic enforcement.

Police are participating in a national study that targets specific portions of the city to provide increased enforcement based on previous crime and crash data collected the year before, according to the city.

Eagan police are working with the Dakota County Sheriff's Office to participate in the study known as the Data-Driven Approaches to Crime and Traffic Safety. New target areas will be identified monthly, the city said.

Police are hoping the highly visible enforcement will work to deter crime.

The program will run through Aug. 31. Data will then be analyzed to see if the extra enforcement lowered the number of criminal incidents and traffic crashes.

The program has been used in other cities across the country including Baltimore and Nashville.
