In the first three days of a statewide distracted driving crackdown, 131 citations have been issued for texting while driving, according to the Department of Public Safety.

Officers also cited 448 people for seatbelt violations and 10 people were arrested for DWI.

According to the Department of Public Safety, more than 86,000 crashes from 2009 to 2013 were attributed to distracted driving, or 25 percent.

On Thursday, DPS announced a 10-day campaign to step up enforcement and educate people about its dangers. According to the department, nearly 400 Minnesota agencies added extra patrols. The ramped up patrols began Friday, April 11, and will continue through Sunday, April 20.

In Minnesota, it’s illegal for drivers to text or surf the Internet while behind the wheel, including at stoplights. It’s also illegal for drivers under 18 to use a cellphone at all. In 2013, the department says 2,189 citations were issued for texting compared to 1,718 in 2012.
