A Hampton, Minn., man was sentenced to one year in jail, 10 years probation and fined $700 for a fatal crash in November 2013, according to Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom.

Keri James Gesme pleaded guilty in December to one count of criminal vehicular homicide. Two additional counts of criminal vehicular homicide were dismissed.

Police determined Gesme, 28, had a blood alcohol content of .20 when he was driving with his friend Dennis Paul Underwood, 27, of Cannon Falls.

According to the criminal complaint, the truck he was driving went off of Highway 50, drove through the ditch, up into a driveway and then became airborne. While the truck was airborne, it hit several trees. Underwood and Gesme were ejected. Underwood died.

Gesme originally denied driving the vehicle. His family said he had been drinking since 9 that morning. The crash happened around 4 p.m.

“We are pleased that the defendant accepted responsibility for his criminal behavior that took a life. Our deepest sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Dennis Underwood for their great loss,” Backtrom said.
