Children fighting life-threatening diseases enjoyed a special afternoon Thursday. The University of Minnesota Amplatz Children's Hospital held its fifth annual "My Superhero Day."

Superheroes shared their special super powers. Ten-year-old Levi Cooper said his favorite superhero is Spiderman because "he can swing and shoot webs." Twelve-year-old Lexi Erickson said her favorite superhero is Batman.

The children aren't fighting their health battles alone. Along with Spiderman, Batman and Wonderwoman, their families are, too. Five-year-old Gabe said, "I can't wait until we can play, and he can come back home with us, when we go back into our real homes."

For these families the most powerful people weren't covered in costumes. Levi's mother, Rana Cooper, said about her son, "He's my superhero. He is. He's been through a lot. But he just keeps plugging along."

The real superheroes are fighting at the hospital every day, giving the gift of hope. About being an inspiration, Erickson said, "No, I just think, I don't really think of it. It doesn't really seem real." About looking strong, Erickson said, "Yeah, I feel great."

On Thursday, one of the strong children is getting the best gift of all. Rana Cooper said, "We just found out he's getting a new kidney. He has a match ... So, [it's] pretty exciting news for us." On finding out last night that he has a match, Levi Cooper said, "I feel glad." Glad, for a stronger, superhero-like future.

The families and supporters of children's health throughout Minnesota, and the country, are sharing their stories about real-life superheroes at http://www.mmf.umn.edu/children/superhero/stories.cfm
