A 23-year-old man is in custody after leading police on a 10 mile car chase that ended in an officer involved shooting, according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.
Ty Justin Andree has been jailed on suspicion of possessing a stolen firearm, among with other possible charges, DPS Spokesman Bruce Gordon said.
Around 8:30 p.m. on Friday, a Becker County deputy found a vehicle, driven by Andree, that was thought to be connected with a theft from a liquor store in Detroit Lakes, Gordon said.
Andree led deputies on a chase that ended when the Bemidji man ran over spike strips officers had put on the road to stop him, Gordon said.
According to the preliminary investigation, Andree then exited the vehicle on County Road 44 near Two Inlets armed with a shotgun, Gordon said. The two Becker and Hubbard County deputies on the scene took cover behind squad cars as Andree approached them.
Andree was able to get into one of the squad cars and was shot at by both officers as he drove away, Gordon said. He was stopped again with spike strips placed on the road.
Andree was taken into custody and transported to St. Joseph's Hospital in Park Rapids with minor injuries, Gordon said.
The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, Gordon said. This is standard for all officers following an officer involved shooting.
The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating.
