Secretary of State Mark Ritchie on Friday is encouraging high school seniors to hit the polls next November as part of Democracy Day.
Democracy Day celebrates the anniversary of the 26th amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which gave 18-year-olds the right to vote. Ritchie spoke to students about the importance of participating in the democratic process.
According to the Secretary of State’s Office, Minnesota has the highest voter turnout in the nation, but turnout for gubernatorial election years is lower than presidential years, and young voters have lower turnout rates.
Ritchie visited St. Paul’s Central High School.
