The Alzheimer’s Association is preparing to launch a nationwide initiative to highlight the struggles women have fighting the disease.

The initiative comes on the heels of a new report from the organization that found women at age 65 have a one in six chance of developing the disease; men have a one in 11 chance.

Not only are women more at risk, but they’re more likely to be a caregiver for a loved one who is living with the disease, according to the association. In Minnesota, 245,000 people care for the 88,000 seniors living with Alzheimer’s, which amounts to 280 million hours of unpaid work.

The Alzheimer’s Association initiative calls on 1 million women to use their brains to help wipe out Alzheimer's disease. It also offers resources and early-detection signs.

A rally was held at the State Capitol to help pass legislation that would require staff care givers have more training on how to help Alzheimer patients
