A piece of St. Paul history will be imploded Sunday morning. The old Island Station coal power plant that has sat empty for years is now wired with explosives for demolition.

Crews have been working for days to prepare the building. The same team that brought down The Metrodome and Lowry Bridge will be taking down the plant.

Eric Kelly and his team from Advanced Explosives Demolition has pre-cut parts of the building. Once the charges are set off it will collapse on top of itself into a pile of rubble.

Frattalone Companies out of St. Paul will then continue their work of demolishing the structure and recycling the materials.

The demolition is set for 10 a.m. Sunday. No plans for the future of the site have been announced.

The power plant was built in the 1920s and has been vacant for many years.
