The Elmwood Branch Post Office in St. Louis Park was evacuated Tuesday due to a sloping roof, firefighters say.

Assistant Fire Chief Cary Smith said the sloping roof was because of the weight of the melting snow.

"The roof drain got clogged frozen, and it's causing a backup of water on the roof, so there's extra weight up there," Smith said. "There is some water leaking inside the building, so they want to keep the building unoccupied until they have someone evaluate that."

A structural engineer reviewed the roof structure, and the fire department helped to clear out the roof drains and pump the water off to help reduce the weight.

The evacuation was just a precautionary measure, and the building reopened at noon.
