Minn. High School Students to Compete in Nat'l Cooking Competition

Today's future top chefs in Minnesota competed for the chance to qualify for the national competition in the 2014 Hospitality Minnesota Education Foundation's Sysco ProStart Student Invitational.

Ten teams of three or four students each were given one hour to make an appetizer or salad, entree, and dessert. Hundreds of students across the state participate in ProStart programs, a credited course that teaches them culinary and restaurant management skills.

Organizers say many of the students will pursue careers in cooking. Tuesday's competition was held at Sysco in Mounds View.

Elk River High School won the culinary competition, while Sauk Rapids-Rice won the management competition.

They will now go to the national competition, competing against 45 other states and Guam from May 3-5. The national competition will be held at the Hyatt Hotel in Minneapolis.
