At Issue: State Legislative Session Starts; Obama Visits

In this week's edition of At Issue, host Tom Hauser takes an in-depth look at the local political issues that affect you.

The Minnesota Legislature will be busy this session deciding what to do with a $1.2 billion surplus. A new economic forecast on Friday showed the new predications. Already, legislators are discussing ideas including one that would repeal business-to-business taxes.

Gov. Mark Dayton was expected to sign an emergency heating bill, which gives assistance to Minnesotans facing a particularly harsh and cold winter and a propane shortage.

President Barack Obama visited St. Paul's Union Depot on Wednesday to promote a plan to make a major investment in transportation infrastructure. The president is proposing $600 million in competitive grants.

University of Minnesota President Eric Kaler joined host Tom Hauser in the studio to talk about the university's $233 million funding request for building renovation and new construction, progress on campus security concerns and the approval of a nearly doubled contract for Gopher football coach Jerry Kill.

In Political Analysis, Ember Reichgott Junge, former DFL state senator, and Brian McClung, Gov. Tim Pawlenty's Deputy Chief of Staff, discussed the new legislative session and what Minnesotans can expect to see accomplished.
