We are getting a better idea Tuesday of how our brutal winter is impacting the economy - especially retail.

On Tuesday Macy's blamed the series of winter storms for a drop in January sales.

At one time, Macy's says nearly 250 of its stores were closed because of weather. Sales have remained sluggish ever since.

But there is a bright spot for Macy's. The retailer says solid holiday sales helped push its fourth quarter profit up 11 percent.
