Minnesota health officials are investigating a salmonella outbreak after they say 23 people were sickened from eating at an Old Country Buffet in Maple Grove in late January.

Minnesota Health Department Spokesperson Doug Schultz says 11 of the 23 cases have tested positive for Salmonella Enteritidis. One person was hospitalized, Schultz says.

Officials have not yet identified a specific food item or items which may be the source for the infections.

There is no evidence of ongoing transmission of the disease at the restaurant, Schultz says.

Following a standard outbreak-response inspection, Old Country Buffet was cleared by Hennepin County Environmental Health officials to remain open, Schultz says.

Calls to Old Country Buffet's parent company, Ovation Brands, were not immediately returned.

According to the Center for Disease Control, people infected with salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps within a few days after infection. The illness usually lasts four to seven days, with most people able to recover without treatment.

However, sometimes the salmonella infection may spread from the intestines to the blood stream, and then to other body sites, which can cause death unless the person is treated with antibiotics. The elderly, infants, and those with impaired immune systems are more likely to have a severe illness.
