The upcoming deadline to remove ice houses from lakes could pose problems for Minnesotans this year - mainly because their ice houses are stuck.

This season's snowfall and colder temperatures have led to snow and ice buildup on lakes. More snow is expected before March 3, which is the deadline set by the Department of Natural Resources for ice house owners to remove the structures from lakes south of Highway 10.

More information on ice house removal deadlines is available here.

A western Hennepin County lake is just one place where ice house owners are experiencing problems. According to Jennifer Johnson with the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, several ice houses on Medicine Lake in Plymouth will take a while to remove because of the snow and ice conditions.

Johnson said it also appears someone left their truck on the lake because it was too difficult to drive it off.

The county is responsible for overseeing its water patrol division. Officials are aware of the situation and are waiting for the weather conditions to improve before the deadline, Johnson said.

The DNR is not currently talking about extending the deadline, so those with ice houses on lakes are still expected to remove their houses.

If shelters are not removed, owners could be charged, according to the Department of Natural Resources. Moreover, they will lose the structure and contents may be confiscated or destroyed by a conservation officer, the DNR says.

Ice fishing is a popular Minnesota winter sport, but this year's weather could lead to problems with removal.
