Negotiators for the St. Paul Federation of Teachers and St. Paul Public Schools have reached a tentative agreement on their 2013-2015 labor contract after a 24-hour mediation session was held last Thursday.

The St. Paul Federation of Teachers wants less standardized testing and more pre-k education. They also want the hiring of more in-school staff like librarians, nurses, and counselors.  Mayor Chris Coleman told KSTP the proposal concentrates on class sizes, too.

"Agreement on staffing is one of the hardest ones, so they came to different ratios depending on whether it's a high poverty or low poverty school,” he said.

The proposed two-year deal also updates salary and benefits.

For months, the district argued those issues didn't belong in a teacher's contract and would cost $150 million.

The deal is conditional; union members must vote on it before it’s official.

The union will hold a membership meeting Monday to discuss details of the tentative agreement, but the strike authorization vote scheduled for Feb. 24 has been canceled.
