Gophers basketball sophomore Wally Ellenson announced he will leave the basketball team to focus on track. "We respect Wally's decision, and wish him, Coach Steve Plascencia and the Gophers track & field team nothing but the best this season," men's basketball coach Richard Pitino said in a statement.

Ellenson advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships last year and earned All-America First Team honors. He also won gold at the Junior Pan American Games in Colombia last summer.

The basketball court was a different story though, as he played in only nine games this season, none during the conference portion of the schedule.

The Gophers continue to show interest in Wally's brother, Henry, who is a junior at Rice Lake High School in Rice Lake, Wis.

Minnesota's outdoor track season begins March 21, but Ellenson may compete as soon as this weekend in the Big Ten Indoor Championships in Ohio.

Wally Ellenson competes in an inter-squad scrimmage on October 18, 2013.
