Hundreds of Minnesotans are officially U.S. citizens Tuesday; 444 people from 79 countries took the Oath of Allegiance and received their citizenship certificates at a naturalization ceremony.

It took place Tuesday morning at the Earle Brown Event Center in Brooklyn Center.

To become a citizen, immigrants have to prove they can read, write, and speak English and can pass a civics test on the American government.

Rep. Erik Paulsen spoke at the event, which coincided with Presidents Day week.

About 500 people took the Oath of Allegiance and received their citizenship certificates at a naturalization ceremony.
