When Ty and Michelle Lehman of rural Brainerd took their son trick-or-treating a couple of years ago they had no idea that one of the “treats” would change their lives.
Their then 5-year-old, son, Tyler, was given a free week at a local karate club and took to it like a duck to water.
By the time he was 6, Tyler had achieved what most people take many years to attain, a black belt. Not a kid’s version, but the real thing.
Tyler shows such dedication and skill that even though he weighs less than 50 pounds and is only 48 inches tall, he is among the most skilled at the weekly classes at the local martial arts club.
Master instructor Rob Nelson said it's the equivalent of getting a college degree at 6 years old.
If Tyler continues to train, he will eventually become one of the youngest black belts to the 10th degree in the world. He will be just 55 years old.
