Minnesota Wild defenseman Ryan Suter is participating in the 2014 Winter Olympics as an alternate captain for the men's hockey team. While in Sochi, he described some of his experiences and how he is spending his time off the ice.

How was the travel over? How does someone get from Minneapolis to Sochi?

The travel here to Sochi was great. It couldn't have gone any smoother. We flew to Newark and got on one of the four charters that the NHLPA had for all the NHL players and then flew direct into Sochi. In total, it was an 8 hour and 30 minute flight.

What were your first impressions of Sochi?

It's nice. The weather has been great and the (Olympic) park is also very clean and secure. There are soldiers everywhere. We feel safe and comfortable.

Are all the media members exaggerating about their hotel set-ups?

I haven't been to the hotels, so all I can speak for is us and we've been treated very well.

How was the opening ceremony?

We were still in the U.S. for the opening ceremonies, but we watched them on TV and they looked very good.

What’s the training schedule?

Well, I'm not getting much sleep so hopefully that gets better. We've had two practices though and one more today. The team is focused and excited for the game on Thursday.

What’s the scouting report on Slovakia? (The U.S. plays Slovakia Thursday at 6:30 p.m. CST)

Slovakia is a fast team that tries to build a lot of speed through the neutral zone. They also have strong goaltending and a couple dangerous forwards. We're looking forward to it.
