A little apartment above the post office in Henderson, Minn., is an old-Hollywood haven for the memorabilia and mementos of a former Minnesota motion picture cameraman.
Jason Davis went on the road to meet Joel King, a Lakefield, Minn., native who headed west at 18-years-old to make a name for himself.
Every room in his apartment is stuffed with an array of the items he gathered during a career with the stars. Joel worked on scores of major movies, and as an avid portrait photographer, collected lots of great photographs.
On the set, he often took the opportunity to get unique shots of the stars. Joel said it was a wild ride working with characters like Dustin Hoffman and Gregory Peck, but the exotic locations were all make believe.
Much of Joel’s collection is rare and some of it is quite valuable. He has a check for nearly $600 that he never chased, because the signee— Prince— rarely gives autographs.
Joel said the collection reminds him of an exciting career.
